Sensenbrenner Urges President to Open Independent Investigation of BP Spill

Washington, D.C.- Representative Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., told President Obama that his Administration should open a separate, independent investigation of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill after the initial report from the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon showed that the Administration failed to act upon or fully inform the public of the worst-case estimates on the spill.

In a letter to President Obama, Sensenbrenner, Ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, said that a separate investigation into the spill would "send a strong message to the American people if you accepted responsibility for the Administration's mishandling of the disaster."
"At the outset of this disaster, I wrote to the President to express concerns about the federal response. I worried then that the Administration may be underestimating the damage and that it was difficult to determine who was in charge. According to the initial National Commission reports on the oil spill, my concerns about lackluster leadership were not unfounded - they make clear that a portion of the blame lies within the Administration," Sensenbrenner said.
Sensenbrenner asked that the Administration reply to both letters by Oct. 29.
