Washington, D.C. -Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, cosponsored bipartisan legislation that will require a better response from both industry and the government in the event of another major offshore oil spill.
"In order for offshore drilling to be done safely, oil companies need to have a project for the worst-case scenario," Sensenbrenner said. "This bill requires any company engaged in offshore drilling to have a project ready, and it requires the federal government to make sure that project will work."
The Better Oil Spill Response Project Act of 2010, H.R. 5608, was introduced by Representative Ed Markey, D-Mass, Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. The bill requires:
· Oil companies to give the federal government updated response projects within 6 months of passage. These projects must include estimates of the worst-case scenarios for oil and gas drilling for various regions in the U.S.
· The federal government to revise regulations for oil and gas companies' response projects within one year. The bill also requires that lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon leak be incorporated into new regulations.
· Strengthening of the safety review and approval process for dispersants or other chemicals.
"In the 85 days since the spill occurred, we've learned that both industry and the government need to assume more responsibility when it comes to these types of disasters," Sensenbrenner said. "This bill will put responsibility back where it belongs."
