Washington, D.C. -Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, commended the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Construction Authorization Board for rejecting the D.O.E.'s request to withdraw the license application for the Yucca Mountain waste storage repository. Representative Sensenbrenner issued the following statement on the board's ruling:

"I'm glad the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Construction Authorization Board saw what many of us saw. The Administration has offered no good reasons to walk away from the considerable time and taxpayer-money invested into the Yucca Mountain facility. As the board noted, the D.O.E. conceded that its efforts to withdraw Yucca Mountain from consideration for waste storage wasn't based on a flawed application or safety concerns. From the beginning, the D.O.E.'s decision was characterized by partisan horse-trading, not sound science or policy.
"A nuclear power renaissance will strengthen America's energy security and reduce carbon emissions. This is a policy goal that everyone can agree to. But before this can happen, utilities need a reliable waste storage facility. I'm pleased that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be able to fairly evaluate the Yucca Mountain facility."
