(CHICAGO - May 26, 2011) The E.P.A. and 3 other federal and state agencies will host a meeting June two to update the public on a contaminated sediment cleanup planned for the East Chicago and Hammond, Indiana, area. The cleanup, funded under the Great Lakes Legacy Act, involves the Grand Calumet River and Roxana Marsh, near the West Branch of the Grand Calumet.

Officials from the U.S.F.W.S. and the Indiana Departments of Environmental Management and Natural Resources will join E.P.A. representatives at the open house-style meeting from 3:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Roxana Senior Center, 900 Shell St., East Chicago.

The plan includes removal of river bottom sediment and habitat restoration. Work will begin in mid-June and continue through summer 2012. E.P.A. is providing 65 percent of the projected $50 million plan cost, with the State of Indiana contributing 35 percent.
