E.P.A. to extend review period on Michindoh Sole-Source Aquifer petition until April 16

No. 10-OPA008
Chicago (Jan. 29, 2010) -- E.P.A. Region five has given the public more time to review on an application from the city of Bryan, Ohio, to designate the Michindoh Aquifer as the sole source of drinking water for an area comprising 9 counties. After 2 public meetings and a public hearing in January, E.P.A. decided to extend the review period until Friday, April 16.
The suggested Michindoh Sole-Source Aquifer designation would include parts of Allen, DeKalb and Steuben counties in Indiana; Branch, Hillsdale and Lenawee counties in Michigan; and Defiance and Fulton counties, and all of Williams Co. in Ohio.
When E.P.A. designates an aquifer as the sole source of drinking water for an area, it must review all federally funded plans in the area to determine potential for contaminating the aquifer. No federal funds may be spent on plans which E.P.A. determines may contaminate the aquifer.
