The E.P.A. (EPA) presented the University of Oregon Campus Recycling Plan with a College/University Partner of the Year Award for educating by example on the importance of waste reduction. The University of Oregon Campus Recycling Plan is responsible for campus-wide recycling collection.
With approximately 23,500 people on campus, the University of Oregon generates significant quantities of waste. Hence, the students founded the Campus Recycling Program, which strives to make recycling and waste prevention a priority. Organized in 1989, the Plan began with 160 paper collection sites. Today, it has greatly expanded-currently employing 45 students and 5 full-time staff members-to collect numerous materials at in excess of 1,500 sites throughout the campus. During the 2003-2004 school year, the campus diverted 48 percent of its waste through recycling.
E.P.A. is proud to honor the University of Oregon Campus Recycling Plan for these extraordinary achievements at the WasteWise 2005 Yearly Conference. The University of Oregon Campus Recycling Plan is one of only ten organizations to gain a Partner of the Year Award at this event.
WasteWise is a free and voluntary partnership Plan launched by E.P.A. in 1994. The Plan provides guidance and recognition to in excess of 1,800 participating organizations that are working to find practical methods to reduce municipal solid waste and enhance financial performance. E.P.A. is pleased to recognize the University of Oregon Campus Recycling Plan and other members that have made the Plan a success through their sustained commitment to waste reduction.
