The E.P.A. (EPA) presented Kitsap County, Washington with a Local Government Partner of the Year Award for maintaining its position as a leader in a waste reduction. With its cost-saving waste reduction programs, Kitsap Co. proved once again that recycling does pay.

It was another successful year for Kitsap County, a WasteWise award winner for the past 5 years. Kitsap County's unique waste reduction plan collected in excess of 3,300 tons of material for recycling and saved in excess of $260,000 in avoided disposal costs. Kitsap County's success stems from several key plan features, including a countywide directive to annually identify and report on departmental activities to reduce waste and attend yearly waste reduction trainings. Employees used the paperless Wa$te Exchange to swap office surplus, rather than buying new products, and saved $1,400 in the process.

E.P.A. is proud to honor Kitsap Co. for these extraordinary achievements at the WasteWise 2005 Yearly Conference. Kitsap Co. is one of only ten organizations to gain a Partner of the Year Award at this event.

WasteWise is a free and voluntary partnership plan launched by E.P.A. in 1994. The plan provides guidance and recognition to in excess of 1,800 participating organizations that are working to find practical methods to reduce municipal solid waste and enhance financial performance. E.P.A. is pleased to recognize Kitsap Co. and other members that have made the plan a success through their sustained commitment to waste reduction.
