(07/23/03) E.P.A. is producing and distributing a radio Public Service Announcement (PSA) this month, aimed at encouraging residents who live in urban communities to reuse, recycle and make choices that make a real environmental difference. The PSA, in 30 and 60-second versions, features the gospel music group, "Mighty Clouds of Joy," which will soon be singing the praises of environmental awareness on 50 radio stations across the country, including some in the country's biggest cities, including New York, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Memphis, Washington, D.C., and New Orleans. In the PSAs, singers Joe Ligon and Richard Wallace of the "Mighty Clouds of Joy" say, "Recycling twelve tons of paper saves about 20 trees. Recycling is good for the soul, good for the planet and good for the neighborhood." The "Mighty Clouds of Joy" have had a long career and are the 1st gospel group ever to perform on "Soul Train." Over the years, they have been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, winning three. Today's PSA is the 2nd in EPA's Urban African American Outreach program; the first, which has already received significant play on the airwaves, features Miss U.S.A. Shauntay Hinton. The outreach plan is part of EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge, an initiative urging all Americans to embrace a resource conservation ethic of producing, purchasing and using products that are easy to recycle and consist of recycled materials.
