E.P.A. Encourages Participation at the TechBirmingham Ecycling Day event in Birmingham, Alabama for Earth Day 2006

(ATLANTA - April 18, 2006) E.P.A. is proud to partner with TechBirmingham for its 2nd year metro-wide Ecycling Day on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2006 in Birmingham, Ala. Residents from across the Birmingham area and beyond will be asked to deliver accepted items to twelve designated collection locations. This event is believed to be one of the biggest Ecycling events in the Southeast; the 2005 TechBirmingham Ecycling Day resulted in over 75 tons of equipment collected and diverted from Alabama landfills. E.P.A. has been providing technical assistance.

12 locations will accept items on Saturday. Electronic equipment in any condition (working, damaged or outdated) may be donated. Items accepted include: desktop computers, laptop computers, computer monitors, keyboards and input devices, printers, scanners, digital cameras, PDAs and handheld devices, game systems, printer cartridges (laser and inkjet), and cell phones. Absolutely no televisions or "white goods" (kitchen appliances, microwaves, etc.) can be accepted. For other household hazardous items, the public is encouraged to visit the Jefferson County, Ala. Household Hazardous Waste Day, also scheduled for Earth Day 2006.

Volunteers at most locations will assist in the unloading of donated equipment and provide each consumer with a tax receipt. Many of the computers collected will be refurbished and redistributed into the community for reuse.

To demonstrate their commitment to electronic waste recycling initiatives, TechBirmingham is participating in EPA's "Pass It On Week," as part of EPA's efforts to collect and recycle as many computers and other electronics as possible for reuse in celebration of Earth Day. TechBirmingham will also be participating in the Computer Reuse and Recycling Coalition's 100 Percent Day, in an effort to collect 100,000 personal computers throughout the U.S. This effort will quantify any April 21 or April 22 Earth Day E-Waste collection events.
