Companies Get Kudos for Recycling Coal By-Products

(Washington, D.C. - Oct. 24, 2006) 11 organizations, from energy companies to universities to a big box store, received awards from the E.P.A. for their achievements in using the by-products generated from burning coal in coal-fired power plants. The organizations are part of EPA's Coal Combustion Products Partnership. In addition, 3 individuals received recognition for their leadership in increasing the amount of coal combustion products recycled and used.

E.P.A. also welcomed the Department of Agriculture as a sponsor of the Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2). Other sponsors include the American Coal Ash Association, the Utility Solid Waste Activities Group, the Federal Hwy. Administration, and the D.O.E., as well as EPA.

"Having U.S.D.A. as a C2P2 sponsor means that we can increase the use of coal combustion products substantially," said Matt Hale, director of EPA's Office of Solid Waste. "They can help identify expanded uses of coal ash and work with E.P.A. to ensure such uses are environmentally protective."

The Coal Combustion Products Partnership is a voluntary partnership, with in excess of 150 private and public partners working to increase the beneficial use of coal ash. Currently, there is a 40 percent recycling rate for coal combustion products. Using these by-products safely preserves our natural resources, conserves energy, saves money, and promotes environmental sustainability.
