RICHLAND, Wash. - The deputy director for science and technology at the D.O.E.'s Pacific Northwest National Lab has been elected to the rank of Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.
Steven Ashby was elected in the mathematics section for "exceptional technical contributions and scientific leadership in applied mathematics and computational science, particularly the development of novel numerical methods and robust software for parallel computers, as well as for exemplary service to the field of computational science and engineering."
He has focused his research on a variety of important problems, including groundwater contamination. He has been an advocate for computational science through various professional society activities and involvement in national computing initiatives.

He also oversees laboratory-wide efforts to elevate PNNL's standing in the broader scientific community and to engage industry.
Additionally, Ashby currently serves as the chair of DOE's National Lab Chief Research Officers Council, which advises national Lab directors and D.O.E. senior leadership on scientific and programmatic topics.
AAAS is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people.
