WASHINGTON, DC - The D.O.E. (DOE) today announced that Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), LLC has been selected as the management and operating contractor for DOE's Savannah River Location (SRS) in Aiken, South Carolina. The contract is a cost-plus award-fee contract valued at approximately $800 million per year and is for a five-year base period with the option to extend it for up to 5 additional years.

SRNS is a limited liability corporation consisting of Fluor Federal Services, Inc., Honeywell International, Inc., and Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company (a Northrop Grumman Company). The team also includes subcontractors Lockheed Martin Services, Incorporated and Nuclear Fuel Services, Incorporated

"In the Department's rich and diverse history, the Savannah River Location is acknowledged for its critical role in support of countrywide security objectives, scientific innovation, and stewardship of the environment," U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman said. "Through today's contract award, we look forward to working with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC to continue the site's strong record in carrying out its complex missions. SRNS's experience will position DOE's Savannah River Location for the future as we work to facilitate science-driven development of new technologies, advance our countrywide security interests, and meet our environmental cleanup goals."

The SRS management and operating contract includes 3 key mission areas: environmental cleanup, operation of the Savannah River Countrywide Lab (SRNL), and Countrywide Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) activities. Environmental cleanup activities include management of spent nuclear fuel, nuclear materials, and non high-level radioactive waste; deactivation and decommissioning of excess facilities; and remediation of soil and groundwater. In support of the D.O.E. Countrywide security and non-proliferation programs, the NNSA activities include operation of the tritium facilities, completion of the plutonium disposition program, and disposition of highly enriched uranium. The contract includes operation of SRNL, one of DOE's world class Countrywide laboratories, which supports departmental environmental cleanup, energy security, and Countrywide security missions. The contractor also will manage pensions and benefits and SRS infrastructure.

The transition period of the new contractor will begin on January 24, 2008 and will be completed in 90 days. SRNS will assume management and operation of the Savannah River Location under the new contract in April 2008. The base period of the contract is from January 2008 through December 2012 with a five-year option from January 2013 through December 2017.

The SRS management and operating contract is the 1st to be awarded as part of DOE's innovative contracting strategy for the Savannah River site. This strategy will increase the number of prime contracts on the Location as the Department focuses on continuing cleanup momentum and accomplishing specific mission critical activities.

The Savannah River Location is a key D.O.E. industrial complex, focusing on the cleanup of legacy materials and wastes left from the Cold War. It comprises 310 square miles in Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell Counties, South Carolina. Constructed during the 1950s to produce basic materials used in the fabrication of nuclear weapons in support of our nation's defense programs, SRS is acknowledged for performance and excellence in support of our Countrywide security and as a responsible steward of the environment.
