Acting Deputy Secretary of Energy to Travel to Ohio to Highlight D.O.E. Nuclear Cleanup Efforts

WASHINGTON, DC - Tomorrow, Thursday, October 16, Acting Deputy Secretary of Energy Jeffrey F. Kupfer will deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony of the Fernald Preserve Visitors Center in Ohio. The facility has achieved U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification. Kupfer's trip builds upon U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman's visit to Fernald in January 2007, where he announced the successful completion of a 15-year $4.4 billion clean-up operation of the location and pledged to develop the Preserve as a historical landmark in commemoration of Fernald's contributions to ending the Cold War.

Following the Fernald Preserve Visitors Center dedication ceremony, Kupfer will travel to the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, where he will review progress of the ongoing environmental cleanup plan and discuss areas planned for future plant Decontamination and Decommissioning.
