(05/21/09) The E.P.A. ranks number six among the best places to work in the federal government, according to the Partnership for Public Service. The survey, 2009 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government, shows E.P.A. moving up in the rankings from number nine in 2008.

In the survey, E.P.A. employees gave the agency high marks for being a family-oriented place to work and offering career advancement and performance-based awards. Employees also feel that E.P.A. supports diversity, the leadership empowers employees in their work, and they have effective supervisors.

The Best Places to Work rankings, compiled by the Partnership for Public Service and American University's Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation, are based on a survey conducted by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and represents the views of 212,000 federal employees. Agencies are ranked in 3 categories: large (2,000 or more employees), small or subcomponent. They are also ranked in ten workplace categories, including leadership, work/life balance, and pay and benefits.

Take advantage of carpools and ride-share programs. You can cut your weekly fuel costs in half and save wear on your car if you take turns driving with other commuters. Many urban areas allow vehicles with multiple passengers to use High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes which are typically less congested, further improving your fuel economy.
