Public Meeting Scheduled for 35th Avenue Location in North Birmingham

Date: Friday, October 3rd, 2014

(ATLANTA - October 3, 2014) The E.P.A. (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 6:00 pm in the Trinity CME Church sanctuary on 3313 Shuttlesworth Dr., Birmingham, Alabama 35207 to inform community stakeholders about inclusion of the 35th Avenue Location on the National Priorities List (NPL).

Citizens are invited to attend the presentation by Agency officials to learn more about the NPL process and are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback.

Through soil testing of approximately 1200 residential parcels within the Collegeville, Harriman Park and Fairmont communities, E.P.A. has determined that contaminants exist at levels which require further action through the Superfund remedial program. The remedial plan investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country by eliminating or reducing health risks and environmental contamination associated with hazardous waste sites. Currently, EPA's Superfund Removal Plan has a time-critical removal action underway that is addressing some of the most contaminated yards within the 35th Avenue Site.

On September 22, 2014, the E.P.A. suggested to add the 35th Avenue Location to the NPL. The NPL is a list of national priorities among the known or threatened delivers of hazardous substances throughout the United States. The NPL is intended primarily to guide E.P.A. in determining which sites warrant further investigation to assess the nature and extent of public health and environmental risks associated with a site. Suggested NPL sites are subject to a 60-day public review period. E.P.A. will accept written comments on the NPL suggestion from September 22, 2014 through November 21, 2014. The final listing of the Location on the NPL will occur in 2015, and will include a response to any comments received.

The materials used to support the Suggested listing are accessible for viewing online at www.regulations.gov. Written comments to the Suggested listing may be submitted 3 different ways. Comments can be sent in the mail to Docket Coordinator, Headquarters, E.P.A., CERCLA Docket Office (mail code 5305T), 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Washington, DC 20460. They can also be submitted via email to [email protected] or online at www.regulations.gov.
