Public Availability Sessions Scheduled for Lee’s Lane Landfill Superfund Location

ATLANTA - The E.P.A. (EPA) will hold public availability sessions to provide information and answer questions about recent on-site sampling results and upcoming activities at the Lee's Lane Landfill Superfund Location in Louisville, KY. The sessions will be held at the Western High School Cafeteria, 2501 Rockford Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40216 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Representatives from E.P.A. and the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection (KDEP) will be accessible to address community concerns.

The Lee's Lane Landfill Superfund Site, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is a 112-acre Location that received over 2 million cubic yards of domestic, commercial, and industrial wastes between the 1940s and 1975.

In 1975, residents living next to the Location reported flash fires around their water heaters. After explosive levels of methane gas were detected, 7 nearby homes were evacuated and purchased by local authorities. The landfill was closed by the State that same year. In 1980, State personnel discovered 400 exposed drums of hazardous materials, some highly flammable, along the Ohio River bank next to the landfill.

A media availability session will be held at the Western High School Library on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. Location representatives will be accessible to answer media questions concerning activities at the Site.
