E.P.A. to Hold a Public Meeting concerning the Stauffer Chemical Superfund Sites Operable Unit three Cold Creek Swamp

(ATLANTA) The E.P.A. (EPA) will hold a Public Meeting from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Turnerville Volunteer Fire Department, 13145 Hwy. 43 North, Axis, Alabama. Representatives from E.P.A. will be accessible to provide information and answer questions about the Stauffer Chemical Superfund Sites Operable Unit three Cold Creek Swamp Remedial Design/Action and construction that is planned to begin in early 2015.

The Stauffer Chemical LeMoyne Plant (LP) Location and the Stauffer Chemical Cold Creek Plant (CCP) Location are Superfund Sites that were placed on the National Priorities List in September 1983. Since the sites are adjacent to one another, their remedial activities are being completed together and they are often referred to as the Stauffer Superfund Sites. The LP Location is approximately 730 acres and is currently owned by Akzo Noble, Incorporated The CCP Location is approximately 220 acres and is currently owned by Syngenta Crop Protection, Incorporated

Wastewater from the Stauffer processes were held in clay-lined lagoons and discharged to Cold Creek Swamp from the Stauffer Superfund Sites until approximately 1975. The wastewater from the LP included discharges of process waters from several production units. Process water discharges from one of the production units contained mercury. Neutralized waste brine from the CCP was also discharged to the swamp during the late 1960s. Processed wastewater discharged to Cold Creek Swamp ceased in 1975 when a discharge pipeline was constructed to convey wastewater from treatment areas directly to the Mobile River. Treated effluent is discharged to the Mobile River in accordance with Syngenta and Akzo Nobel's individual National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits. No wastewater is currently discharged to the swamp.
