E.P.A. suggests adding Riverside Groundwater Contamination location in Indianapolis to Superfund cleanup list

CHICAGO (April 6, 2016) - E.P.A. today announced a suggestion to add the Riverside Groundwater Contamination location in Indianapolis to the National Priorities List. The NPL is EPA's list of Superfund sites. Superfund is the federal plan that investigates and cleans up the most complex uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country.

In 2012, a plume of chlorinated solvents was discovered at the location which is near the Riverside and White River municipal well fields. E.P.A. has been working with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to resolve the issue. To date, only low levels of contaminants have been found in some municipal wells. The concentrations of chlorinated solvents detected are well within federal and state drinking water standards. Citizen's Energy Group is treating the drinking water and has been meeting all E.P.A. requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

EPA's Riverside Groundwater Contamination location suggestion will be published in the Federal Register on April 6. E.P.A. will accept public comments for 60 days following publication. For more information on the Riverside Groundwater Contamination site, contact Nuria Muñiz, NPL Coordinator, 312-886-4439, [email protected].

Information about suggested and final NPL sites is accessible on EPA's website: https://www.epa.gov/superfund/current-npl-updates-new-proposed-npl-sites-and-new-npl-sites
