E.P.A. issues cleanup project for former McClellan Air Force Base

SAN FRANCISCO - The E.P.A. today issued a cleanup decision for a large area of the McClellan Air Force Base Superfund location in Sacramento, California. EPA's Record of Decision chooses cleanup actions for contaminated soils across 130 acres in 43 separate areas at the former base.

The Finding of Suitability for Early Transfer #2 Action Sites Record of Decision is the 3rd issued for properties transferred from the U.S. Air Force to McClellan Business Park LLC and is a major step forward in the cleanup and redevelopment of the former base. The cleanup will excavate and remove 60,988 cubic yards of soils contaminated with solvents, metals and other hazardous wastes and require land use restrictions to protect people and the environment from low levels of remaining contamination.

McClellan Air Force Base was closed under the Base Realignment and Closure Act in 1995 and operations stopped in 2001. E.P.A. placed the location on the Superfund list in 1987. Through a privatization process begun in 2007, the Air Force is transferring property and cleanup responsibility at the 3,000-acre former base to McClellan Business Park, with oversight from E.P.A. and the state. The Air Force provides backing to McClellan Business Park to clean up the transferred properties. The Air Force retains the responsibility for cleanup of contamination in the groundwater and in soils deeper than 15 feet, including low-level radioactive contaminants.
