LOS ANGELES - Today the E.P.A. is requesting comments on its suggested PCB permit renewal for Clean Harbors Los Angeles, LLC., a commercial hazardous waste treatment, storage, and transfer facility located approximately 2 miles south of Downtown Los Angeles in the industrial city of Vernon, California
EPA's suggested permit, if finalized, would be valid for ten years and will allow Clean Harbors to continue to receive, store, and repackage PCB wastes. The outline permit imposes new additional safety requirements on the facility including regular random sampling, and more stringent cleanup requirements if the facility were to close.
The 45-day review period begins August 22 and ends October 7, 2013. The E.P.A. is hosting an informational Public Meeting and Hearing on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from six - 8pm at the Slauson Multipurpose Center located at 5306 S. Compton Ave, Los Angeles, California 90011. Comments on the suggested renewal approval may be submitted over the phone; in writing via mail, email or fax; or in person at the public meeting and hearing. E.P.A. will make a final decision on the renewal of the Clean Harbors PCB Approval after considering all public comments submitted.
The Clean Harbors facility has been in operation since 1980 and has been permitted to store PCBs since 1992.
Products that may contain PCBs include: electrical transformers and capacitors, other electrical equipment, and fluorescent light ballasts. E.P.A. regulates the treatment, storage and disposal of PCBs under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
