ATLANTA - EPA's Superfund removal action at the 35
th Avenue Superfund Location in Birmingham, Alabama is currently preparing to begin the 2nd phase of cleanup, which is scheduled to begin in late August 2014. The Phase II cleanup includes soil removal activities of approximately 30 residences that exceed higher risk levels where children are present in the Harriman Park, Collegeville and Fairmont communities.
EPA's next steps include interviewing residence of the properties where the removal activities will take place, conducting removal activities on Phase II properties and continue to discuss sampling results with residents as well as identifying and prioritizing properties for clean-up.
E.P.A. will continue to ensure the affected community and local, state and federal officials are well informed and are provided opportunities to work with us on agency response activities. As part of that process, E.P.A. will periodically attend neighborhood association meeting and environmental organization meetings as well as continue to attend a series meetings with the North Birmingham Community Coalition (NBCC) focusing on the community's environmental issues.
