PHILADELPHIA (May 28, 2014) 2 Virginia communities will share in a nationwide total of $67 million in brownfields backing announced today by the E.P.A. to support cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties. EPA's brownfields grants totaling $600,000 to the City of Hopewell and Town of Pulaski will help the 2 communities conduct environmental assessments of properties and review cleanup options.

"By assessing and cleaning up abandoned properties in Hopewell and Pulaski these communities are building a healthier future while creating new job opportunities," said E.P.A. Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. "We have seen tremendous accomplishments in communities throughout Virginia in transforming contaminated sites into valuable areas for new businesses and other opportunities."

Nationwide, 171 communities in 44 states are receiving 264 E.P.A. brownfields grants, giving communities and businesses a chance to reuse properties that have been laying idle and turn them into useful assets. These brownfields investments boost local economies and create new opportunities for community revitalization.

The grants to Virginia include:
· The City of Hopewell was awarded a total of $400,000 for 2 brownfields assessment grants. The funds will be used to conduct approximately 14 environmental location assessments, conduct clean up planning, and support community engagement activities. This is Hopewell's 1st E.P.A. brownfields assessment grant.
· Town of Pulaski will gain a 2nd $200,000 brownfields assessment grant to prioritize its sites identified under a previous brownfields grant inventory and conduct 9 environmental location assessments. Grant funds also will be used for cleanup planning and community engagement activities.

Since the inception of EPA's brownfields program, Virginia has received in excess of $16 million in brownfields funding. Nationwide, EPA's brownfields plan has made cumulative investments leveraging in excess of $21 billion from a range of public and private sources for cleanup and redevelopment activities, resulting in approximately 93,000 jobs.
