Federal, state, faith, corporate and non-profit leaders project how to meet new national goal to cut wasted food in half by 2030

Washington, D.C. - The 1st national Food Recovery Summit will take place next week in Charleston, S.C. Inspired by the national goal announced by E.P.A. and U.S.D.A. to cut wasted food in half by 2030, partners from all facets of the food industry, recycling and disposal organizations - along with federal agencies, universities, non-profits and other key leaders - will roll up their sleeves and get to work on how to make this goal a reality.

The E.P.A. is co-hosting the Summit along with the Southeast Recycling Development Council, BioCycle, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Mathy Stanislaus, EPA's Assistant Administrator for the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, will kick off the Summit's sessions with a keynote highlighting the environmental, social and economic needs for acting on wasted food. During the course of the three-day Summit, speakers and participants will delve into all aspects of food recovery and examine challenges, generate ideas and opportunities, and share best practices.

Media opportunities include a tour of Lowcountry Food Bank, interviews with E.P.A. Assistant Administrator Mathy Stanislaus, E.P.A. Region four Regional Administrator Heather McTeer Toney and other VIPs, and open-media sessions on topics including industry initiatives, ways to accelerate progress, public awareness campaigns, regulations, residential food recovery programs, composting, food rescue and donation.
