Plan developer Deepwater Wind and technology firm Alstom on February ten announced the signing of major agreements to supply the suggested Block Island Wind Farm with 5 offshore wind turbines. By making an initial payment to Alstom in December 2013, the developer said the Plan will qualify for the federal investment tax credit. Block Island Wind Farm is a suggested 30-megawatt wind energy location off the shore of Rhode Island.
On July 31, 2013, Deepwater Wind was selected by the U.S. Department of the Interior as the provisional winner of 2 offshore wind energy sites located off the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Deepwater's winning bid of $3.8 million for the 2 sites came during the competition for 2 parcels, totaling in excess of 164,000 acres, located within the Wind Energy Area, roughly 17 miles south of Rhode Island, between Block Island, Rhode Island, and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
