Meeting to be Held for Lamar Life Building Employees about Recent Mercury Spill

(Atlanta, Ga. - Oct. 19, 2007) E.P.A. and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality officials will be accessible today at a meeting for employees of the Lamar Life Building in Jackson, Hinds County, Miss. to discuss the recent mercury spill at the building. Officials will provide information and answer questions about the cleanup underway at the Lamar Life building. The meeting will be held at the Saint Andrews Episcopal Cathedral at 305 E. Capitol Street in Jackson at 1:00 p.m. today.

On October 16, MDEQ requested E.P.A. assistance in the assessment and monitoring of cleanup activities at the Lamar Life Building. Approximately 1.5 cups (about eleven lbs) of mercury were reportedly spilled within the building from an overturned trash can. The building is located at 317 East Capitol Street in Jackson. Attention: A media availability session will be held at the Saint Andrews Episcopal Cathedral at 305 E. Capitol Street in Jackson at noon prior to the meeting. E.P.A. officials will be accessible to answer all media questions concerning the emergency response action in progress at the Site. This arrangement will allow for the employees to use the entire meeting to get information and have their questions answered.
