(PASADENA, Texas - Oct. 15, 2008) - The Unified Command Incident Command Post and officials of Galveston County, Texas, have established 2 household hazardous waste drop-off stations for residents of 13 cities and communities in Galveston Co. whose homes have been affected by flooding as a result of Hurricane Ike. The household hazardous waste drop-off locations are:
- Elva Lobit Park; 1091 East FM 646; League City, Texas 77573
- Freddiesville Water Tower (Galveston Co. WCIP 19); 4618 Crane Street; Hitchcock, Texas 77563
The centers will be open 7 days a week beginning Saturday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 26 from nine a.m. to six p.m. These centers will serve residents of League City, Bayou Vista, Hitchcock, Omega Bay, Tiki Island, Bayview, Freddiesville, Kemah, San Leon, Bacliff, Clear Lake Shores, and areas of Dickinson and Clear Lake affected by Hurricane Ike.
Acceptable materials include cleaning, automotive, and lawn and garden products, painting supplies, indoor pesticides, batteries, and fluorescent light bulbs. Please clearly mark containers, and place leaking containers in plastic bags to prevent further spills.
Items that are not appropriate for drop off at these sites include munitions, explosives, tires, animal manure and carcasses, human waste, needles, spoiled food, and other biological items, as well as household appliances, televisions, computers, and other electronic waste.
Be cautious around household hazardous chemicals, even if you are returning home for only a short time. Keep children and pets away from leaking or spilled household chemicals. It is not safe to combine household chemicals from leaking or damaged containers or to burn them. Do not dump chemicals down drains, on the ground, in storm sewers or toilets.
