E.P.A. Declares Household Hazardous Waste Collection for Madison Co. Communities Scheduled July 11-12, 2008

(Kansas City, Kan., July 8, 2008) - The E.P.A. will collect household hazardous waste for the flood-damaged residences of Winterset, Truro, Patterson and East Peru, Iowa on July 11-12, 2008.

WHAT: E.P.A. Region seven will collect flood-damaged household hazardous waste for residents of Winterset, Truro, Patterson and East Peru, Iowa.

WHEN: Friday and Saturday, July eleven and July 12, from eight a.m. to five p.m.

WHERE: Winterset Schools Bus Barn, 923 East Lane, Winterset, Iowa

WHO: Residents should take flood-damaged household hazardous waste to the Winterset Schools Bus Barn collection center on July 11-12, 2008.

The following list shows common household items which contain potentially hazardous ingredients that might be found in flooded garages, basements or other storage space within the home:

Drain cleaners
Wood and metal cleaners/polishers
Toilet cleaners
Tub, tile, shower cleaners
Bleach
Pool chemicals

Indoor Pesticides
Ant sprays and baits
Cockroach sprays and baits
Flea repellents and shampoos
Bug sprays
Household insecticides
Moth repellents
Mouse and rat poisons and baits

Workshop/Painting Supplies
Adhesives and glues
Furniture strippers
Oil or enamel-based paints
Stains and finishes
Paint thinners and turpentine
Paint strippers and removers
Photographic chemicals
Fixatives and other solvents

Automotive Products
Motor oil
Fuel additives
Carburetor and fuel injection cleaners
Air conditioning refrigerants
Starter fluids
Automotive batteries
Transmission and brake fluid
Antifreeze

Lawn and Garden Products
Herbicides
Insecticides
Fungicides/wood preservatives

Flammable Products
Propane tanks and other compressed gas cylinders
Kerosene
Home heating oil

Gas/oil mix

Mercury thermostats/thermometers

Residents are encouraged to take household hazardous waste to the collection center in Winterset on July 11-12, 2008. Proper disposal of household hazardous waste will minimize or prevent long-term environmental damage.

E.P.A. is also retrieving orphaned hazardous containers such as propane tanks, which were swept away in the flood waters. Anyone finding or sighting an orphan tank or drum should be aware that it can be potentially dangerous and should call the Iowa Department of Natural Resources hotline at 515-281-8694 for proper disposal.
