CHICAGO (March 13 , 2009) -U. S. E.P.A. Region five recently settled an administrative case involving hazardous chemical release and inventory reporting violations at Delphi Automotive Systems LLC in Saginaw, Mich.
The company, located at 5825 Delphi Drive, paid $66,887 to resolve EPA's enforcement action for failure to provide immediate notification to the Countrywide Response Center and state and local emergency response commissions of a 100-pound release of chlorine June 13, 2007. At the time the facility was evacuated and 2 employees were treated for symptoms of chlorine exposure. Delphi also failed to submit emergency and hazardous chemical inventory forms to the state and local authorities.
Chlorine delivers greater than ten pounds must be reported. The NRC activates the appropriate response authorities. Responders need to know what they're dealing with so they can take steps to protect people living and working in the area. Delphi has removed the chlorine from the site.
