(ATLANTA - January 11, 2007) The E.P.A. cleanup of hazardous waste at the Hinds Co. Wood Preserving Location in Learned, Hinds County, Miss. began in November 2006. The removal of hazardous waste at the Hinds Co. Wood Preserving Location is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize the Location and remove any hazards it may pose to human health and the environment.

A release of hazardous substances (creosote and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (commonly known as PAHs)) occurred at the Location and, as a result, has contaminated surface and subsurface soils. Investigations were conducted to determine other potential hazardous substance migration pathways from the facility. No off-site contamination was found.

The cleanup will likely be completed by March 2007. The current estimated cost for the entire cleanup is approximately $900,000.

The Hinds Co. Wood Preserving Location is approximately four acres in size and is located at 1220 Learned-Oakley Road in Learned, Miss. The Location operated as a wood treating facility in the early 1960s and ceased operation around 1978.
