FRIDAY: E.P.A. Administrator to Deliver Remarks at 2015 League of United Latin American Citizens Yearly National Convention

WASHINGTON - Tomorrow, E.P.A. (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy will travel to Salt Lake City to deliver remarks at the 2015 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Yearly National Convention & Exposition, during the Women's Luncheon. LULAC is the biggest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States. McCarthy's remarks will focus on the important work of Latina leaders in fighting for change, and environmental justice for vulnerable populations that experience disproportionate public health impacts as related to climate change.

8 percent of children of Hispanic origin have asthma and are almost twice as likely to be hospitalized for an asthma attack as white children. Puerto Rican children have the highest asthma rates among all ethnicities at 20 percent. That's why this summer E.P.A. is working to finalize the Clean Power Plan, a vital piece of President Obama's Climate Action Plan, which aims to cut carbon pollution from existing power plants, the single biggest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Climate change supercharges health risks like asthma and others ailments associated with increased temperatures and pollutants that come packaged with carbon pollution, which negatively affects Latino communities at a disproportionate rate.
