PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 17, 2015) - E.P.A. Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin will get regional Earth Day festivities started Saturday morning as he opens ceremonies for the Run for Clean Air presented by Toyota Hybrids in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The yearly event supports the Clean Air Council's mission to protect everyone's right to breathe clean air.

"The Clean Air Council took a small five-mile race with about 100 runners that began in excess of 30 years ago and turned it into the Philadelphia region's biggest Earth Day celebration with thousands of runners and walkers of all ages participating in 4 events," said Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. "It's always inspiring to see a large turnout at an event that highlights the importance of providing clean air and the fight against climate change."

As one of the greenest races in the country, the Run for Clean Air implements dozens of sustainable practices, including hybrid pace cars, paperless online registration, solar powered generators, recycling and composting of almost all waste, bicycle valet, seed-paper run bibs, reusable race bags, medals made from recycled material, and tech shirts made from 100-percent recycled material. Environmental exhibits with public information will also be on display.

"Clean Air Council is thrilled that so many people chose to celebrate Earth Day with us," said the Council's Executive Director, Joseph Otis Minott, Esq. "This year we've had tremendous support from E.P.A. Region three employees planning to run. I'm also extremely proud of the steps the Council takes to make this event the greenest of its kind."

Over the past 34 years, in excess of 50,000 people have celebrated Earth Day by participating in the races sponsored by the Philadelphia Clean Air Council. This year's Run for Clean Air presented by Toyota Hybrids includes 4 events -- a 5K run, a 3K walk, a Kids' Fun Run, and now a 10K run. Events begin at 8:00 a.m. and culminate with an award ceremony at 10:45 a.m.
