(New York, N.Y.) The E.P.A. is awarding a $91,000 environmental education grant to Warwick Valley Central School District to support the
Envirocation Plan, which will provide environmental education throughout the school district and the surrounding community. The school district will also use the funds to implement 2 major initiatives: a comprehensive recycling program, and a composting plan in every district school building by August 2017.
"The recycling and composting plan offered through this plan will give students and staff hands-on environmental experience that will be a model for other school districts nationwide," said Judith A. Enck, E.P.A. Regional Administrator. "Participants in this grant Plan will come away with a unique perspective of integrating environmental education through real-life plans that will benefit their community."
Specifics of the grant is as follows:
Warwick Valley Central School District - $91,000
Warwick Valley Central School District will use the E.P.A. grant backing to team up with their non-profit partner Sustainable Warwick to develop and implement new environmental education classes in their schools. The courses will offer students community activities related to sustainability and public outreach. Warwick Valley Central School District will reach at least 900 students in addition to the community participation throughout this two-year project.
Warwick Valley Central School District was one of 3 recipients to gain this round of grants from E.P.A. Region 2, which is responsible for New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 8 tribal nations. A total of $273,000 was awarded in E.P.A. Region two for the 3 grants and backing nationwide for this round of grants totaled approximately $3.3 million.
Since 1992, E.P.A. has distributed approximately $65.5 million supporting in excess of 3,600 environmental education plans nationwide.
The grantees were selected from in excess of 400 applications received in February and March 2015. This longstanding, competitive grants plan supports EE plans that increase public awareness about environmental issues and provide participants with the skills to take actions to protect the environment. The plan provides financial support for plans that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods or techniques.
