Representative Sensenbrenner Response to President Bush’s Climate Change Speech

Washington, D.C., April 16, 2008 - U.S. Representative Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, issued the following statement today following President Bush's remarks on climate change:
"While the President set forth laudable goals for confronting climate change today, I have concerns that some in Congress are not ready to adopt these goals. I have always said the devil is in the details and I am waiting to see what new projects are going to be presented to, or introduced in, Congress.
"We must be careful. My constituents in Wisconsin are heavily reliant on coal for electricity production, and it's not clear that the President's goal can be met in my state without timely advances in technology, or by increasing electricity costs.
"As the President correctly noted, reducing greenhouse gases can come at enormous costs, and Congress must move with extreme caution before adopting measures that saddle the working families of Wisconsin, and the nation, with unreasonable energy costs. Finding the right way to confront climate change will be a lengthy process, and one we should consider carefully.
"It is clear from the President's speech today that we both share important principles that must be part of any policy addressing climate change, including support of technology,
protection of jobs and the economy, the inclusion of all major economies, and the production of actual environmental results. From these principles, I believe we can craft climate change policies that enhance both the environment and the economy."
