Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, today made the following remarks regarding today's decision by the Department of Interior to remove gray wolves from the list of threatened and endangered species in the western Great Lakes and the Northern Rocky Mountain states of Idaho and Montana and parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Wolves will remain a protected species in Wyoming.

Senator Boxer said: "The Endangered Species Act has been very successful in recovering some of America's iconic species, including the bald eagle, but I have concerns about the decision to remove the gray wolf from the threatened and endangered species list in this region today. The Environment Committee will gather information to determine whether this action was carried out in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the Endangered Species Act."
