Washington, D.C. - In light of a recent Business Department Inspector General (IG) report uncovering "systematic, nationwide issues" that are affecting fishing industry law enforcement, Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife Chairwoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) has called an upcoming oversight hearing to examine the serious implications of the IG's findings.

The report, which was released in late January 2010, focused on the Enforcement Programs and Operations of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries). The IG found that the "systemic, nationwide issues adversely affecting NOAA's ability to effectively carry out its mission of regulating the fishing industry...have contributed significantly to a highly-charged regulatory climate and dysfunctional relationship between N.O.A.A. and the fishing industry.

"The IG's findings are of serious concern to the fishing industry, Members of Congress, and all who care about the conservation and management of our nation's fisheries resources," Bordallo said. "We need a complete and open discussion of these findings and recommendations to ensure that the problems identified are fully addressed by N.O.A.A. as quickly as possible."

"As soon as this report was released, my Subcommittee staff began discussions with the IG's office to get more information on the full scope of their findings, and to schedule a hearing where these findings can be fully vetted and explored," Bordallo said.

The hearing will include representatives from the Inspector General's office as well as N.O.A.A. Fisheries.
