Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Don Young (R-Alaska) issued the following statement today in response to the lifting of the executive moratorium on energy production in the Outer Continental Shelf by President Bush.

Young is the Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over the outer continental shelf.

"I commend President Bush for lifting this incredibly outdated ban and being proactive in working to address our energy independence crisis. This is an important step toward reducing 's alarming dependence on foreign oil and should be an example for Congress to immediately follow.

"We have vast energy resources off our shores and they sit untouched while 's gas prices have skyrocketed, our economy has faltered, and families struggle simply to make ends meet. It is irresponsible of us to continue the failed policies of locking away American energy resources to further our dependence on OPEC and other foreign nations.

"Today, 97 percent of our offshore areas are not leased and 85 percent are off limits due to the moratorium that President Bush has lifted. According to conservative estimates the OCS contains a minimum of 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

"It's my hope that the Democratic Leadership in Congress will not seek to extend the OCS oil ban through legislation in the next 2 months. This Democratic pandering to the extreme environmental groups over the past 30 years has played a major role in putting in this energy crisis.

"The House Republican Leadership already has made lifting the OCS ban a major component of its long-range, comprehensive energy bill.

"President Bush is showing excellent leadership in this important decision and I can only hope the Democratic Leadership in Congress will finally end their long standing opposition to increasing 's domestic energy production."
