U.S.F.W.S. to Hold Public Meeting to Solicit Comments on Suggested Tree Stand Regulation Change at Marais Des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge
Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge, a unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System located in eastern Kansas, will host a public meeting to provide information about and gain public review on a Suggested tree stand regulation change.
The Suggested change would require daily removal of tree stands from the refuge. Current regulations allow stands to be left in place from September 15 through January 15 of the following year. The Service has determined that leaving tree stands in place for this extended period of time may provide some hunters with greater access than others to quality hunting opportunities on the refuge. Accordingly, the Service has identified daily removal of tree stands as an alternative to ensure all hunters have an equal opportunity to enjoy a quality hunting experience at the refuge.
The public meeting will be held in Pleasanton, Kansas at the Community Building, located at 902 Palm, from six pm to eight pm on Wednesday, March 3, 2009.
This public meeting will be held instead of the open house scheduled for the evening of February 17, 2009 at Refuge Headquarters.
Refuge staff will explain the Suggested regulation change and answer questions about the suggestion and relates issues. Pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act, the Service has developed a outline environmental assessment of the Suggested regulation change. The Service will make copies of the environmental assessment accessible at the meeting and will consider all public comments in the development of the final environmental assessment.
To review on the Suggested change, request a copy of the environmental assessment, or inquire further about this issue, please contact Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge, 24141 Kansas Hwy. 52, Pleasanton, Kansas 66075, or send an e-mail message to ryan_frohling@fws.gov; or call (913) 352-8956.
