No. 10-OPA097

Chicago (Aug. 23, 2010) --- E.P.A. Region five will hold an open house followed by a public meeting Thursday, Aug. 26, to update the community on the ongoing investigation and provide details about the next phase of work at the Ten-Mile Drain location in Saint Clair Shores, Mich.

At the open house, one to four p.m., Aug. 26, at the Saint Clair Shores Public Library, 22500 E. eleven Mile Road, Saint Clair Shores, residents will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with local, state and federal environmental and health officials. There will be no formal presentation at the open house.

The public meeting will begin at seven p.m., Aug. 26, at Lakeview High School, 21100 E. eleven Mile Road. The meeting will be in the R.H. Schaublin Auditorium. After a brief presentation, officials will be accessible for questions.

The Ten-Mile Drain Location has been suggested for placement on the Superfund National Priorities List. A decision on the status of the Location is expected in September. The purpose of the public meeting is to introduce the team working on the plan and explain the Superfund cleanup process and investigation. E.P.A. encourages community input as Ten-Mile Drain moves into the long-term cleanup phase.

Soil and sediment in and around a storm sewer system in Saint Clair Shores are contaminated with PCBs. PCBs also are in canals where the storm sewer discharges into Lake Saint Clair. E.P.A. and other agencies have been involved in several removal plans at the Ten-Mile Drain Location since PCBs were discovered in 2002. However the area has been re-contaminated and the source of the contamination has not been found.

More information about Ten-Mile Drain Location is accessible at http://www.epa.gov/region5/sites/tenmiledrain. For questions or to arrange special accommodations at the meeting, contact Megan McSeveney, E.P.A. community involvement coordinator at mcseveney.megan@ epa.gov, or call 800-621-8431, extension 61972, between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., weekdays.
