(Boston, Massachusetts - March 5, 2008) The South Kingstown, Rhode Island Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant was recently selected by E.P.A. for a Regional "Operations and Maintenance Wastewater Excellence Award".
The staff of the South Kingstown Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, led by Bernard Bishop, Superintendent, was acknowledged by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in the operations and maintenance of the facility to enhance water quality. The plant was among 7 facilities in New England acknowledged for exemplary performance during 2007. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management was instrumental in nominating this facility.
"The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are key to keeping our environment healthy. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve," said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.
The E.P.A. Regional Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance and on-going operator training. More often than not and particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally with limited resources.
"We are extremely pleased to be the 2007 recipient of the Regional E.P.A. Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award. The Town staff shares a mutual respect for the environment and work tirelessly to ensure that the natural surroundings that, in so many ways, define our community are pristine and will remain that way for future generations," said Stephen Alfred, town manager and Public Safety Director.
The staff and facility were acknowledged on January 30th at the yearly New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston. The South Kingstown facility will have the opportunity to be nominated for a Countrywide E.P.A. 2008 Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award this coming spring.
