(Seattle, Wash. - January 12, 2010) In a continuing effort to focus on local solutions to address the declining health of Puget Sound, the E.P.A. is planning on awarding an additional $10 million in grants this spring. The current round of grants focus on creating sound scientific foundations in support of the Puget Sound Action Agenda for 2020, as well as building community empowerment through an Outreach, Education and Stewardship Program.

Organizations can apply for the 2 grant offerings by submitting proposals by March 2, 2010. The Puget Sound Science Grants will range from $200,000 to $700,000, and total $4.5 million. They are to focus on developing and laying scientific foundations for strategies to implement the Puget Sound Partnership's Action Agenda.

The Puget Sound Outreach, Education and Stewardship Grant will be awarded to one organization to focus on building awareness of the issues affecting Puget Sound and encouraging citizen action and environmental stewardship. The grant includes $2 million in the 1st year and $1 million for each of the next 4 years.

"These grants focus on 2 important aspects of Puget Sound recovery, sound science and community engagement," said Michelle Pirzadeh, Acting Administrator for EPA's Pacific Northwest Region. "Puget Sound is a northwest treasure and the people here are capable of great things. This backing will support scientists and concerned citizens to do what they do best."

The grants are open to public, tribal and non-profit organizations including colleges and universities. The Outreach, Education and Stewardship Grant is focused on organizations in Washington State.

In hot areas, if you have west-facing windows use window tints, blinds, deciduous trees or trellises to help keep out heat from the summer sun. In general, you will lower your summer air-conditioning bill by planting trees and bushes along the west side of your home.
