(Boston, Massachusetts - March 1, 2010) - The Newtown, Connecticut Wastewater Treatment Plant was recently selected by E.P.A. for a Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Award.

The staff of Newtown Wastewater Treatment Plant, led by Julio Segarra, Plant Manager, was acknowledged by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in operating and maintaining the plant. The plant was among 6 facilities in New England acknowledged for exemplary performance during 2009. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection was instrumental in nominating this facility. Besides Julio Segarra, Newtown Wastewater Treatment Plant staff includes:

Thomas Maugeri, Mechanic, Steven Knight, Operator, and Jason O'Brien, Area Manager.

In addition, the facility has been provided with outstanding support from Fred Hurley, Public Works Director, Richard Zang, Chairman of the Newtown Water and Sewer Authority, and all of its Board members.

"The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are essential to keeping our environment healthy," said Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office. "I am proud to give them the credit they deserve."

The E.P.A. Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance and on-going operator training. This plan has found that particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally well with limited resources.

The Newtown Wastewater Treatment Plant was acknowledged on January 27th at the yearly New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston.
