The World Resources Institute (WRI) has issued the 1st installment in its Corporate Guide to Green Power Markets series, which was initiated to identify and explain multiple aspects of green power markets for corporate buyers. The 1st report outlines the business case for purchasing green power and describes the challenges faced by companies in making purchases.

In the report, WRI notes that while green power purchasing can offer many corporate benefits, these benefits are not easy to quantify or express in monetary terms. Also, green power purchases can be difficult to implement in today's marketplace because of the unique operational characteristics of some renewable energy sources, unequal policy treatment among different renewable technologies, and market and policy structures that fail to provide monetary value for many of the intrinsic benefits of renewables. Among the strategies identified for overcoming these challenges are for companies to explore nontraditional procurement opportunities and to consider partnerships with other firms interested in procuring green power.

Along with ten large U.S. industrial and commercial energy users, WRI formed the Green Power Market Development Group, which is working to transform energy markets to enable corporate buyers to increase their green power purchases. Representing an estimated 8% of total U.S. corporate energy use, the group looks for to develop 1,000 MW of new, cost-competitive green power by 2010.
