Marin Energy Authority (Calif.) is purchasing in excess of 42 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, enough to meet 25 percent of electricity use for its communities in Marin County. The purchase is of biogas, biomass, and wind through Shell Energy North America. The size of the purchase was great enough to put Marin Energy Authority in the EPA's Top 20 list of the biggest local government green power purchasers nationwide for the 1st time, at Number 13.

The Marin Energy Authority operates Marin Clean Energy, a plan that offers a 25% and 100% renewable option to its customers. Marin Clean Energy is a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program, whereby the existing local utility continues to deliver electricity and bill consumers, but CCA determines the source and price paid for generation.
