(Boston) - E.P.A. recently completed a $150,000 plan at Taunton's Cabin Realty location which included limited demolition and the removal of asbestos debris that could otherwise have become airborne.
The controlled demolition of the boiler room and adjacent smokestack enabled E.P.A. to safely remove asbestos from the boiler room and surrounding area as well as asbestos pipe wrap from throughout the rest of the buildings.
The dilapidated buildings, located on a 7 acre location at 100 Arlington Street, were used for a variety of manufacturing operations between the early 1900's and the late 1990's when the buildings were condemned. With the buildings in an advanced state of disrepair, asbestos materials within became exposed to the environment and risked becoming airborne. EPA's work was conducted to eliminate this potential hazard.
Throughout the cleanup, E.P.A. worked closely with officials from the City of Taunton and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to coordinate the work and to ensure that public health was protected while the potential hazards were removed from the site. The City is currently seeking backing to complete the demolition of the remaining structures and dispose of the debris.
